A WORKBENCH GUIDE · UPDATED OCTOBER 9, 2026

# Price stained glass with your materials and time in view.

A piece-count shortcut can miss expensive glass and hours at the bench. Start with the costs you can measure.

## Build your project cost

- Add the glass, foil or came, solder, and other materials allocated to the piece.
- Multiply your labor hours by the hourly rate you choose.
- Add overhead as a percentage of materials plus labor.
- Choose a markup or a target margin, keeping the two distinct.

The app does not choose a market rate, tax treatment or wage for you. Use your own costs and compare the resulting estimate with the work and selling conditions.

## A worked example

These are fictional amounts in one consistent currency, not recommended prices.

## Markup is different from margin

A 20% markup adds 20% of cost: 100 × 1.20 = 120. Profit of 20 divided by the price of 120 gives a margin of about 16.7%.

A 20% target margin instead uses cost / (1 − margin): 100 / 0.80 = 125. Profit of 25 divided by 125 is 20%.

With 10% overhead on materials plus labor, the same cost base becomes 110. Then a 20% markup gives 132 and a 20% target margin gives 137.50.

## Don't lose the assumptions

Record the materials allocated, hourly rate, hours, overhead and adjustment mode alongside the estimate. Consider packing, selling fees, delivery and rework where relevant; include them deliberately in your cost assumptions rather than assuming the app knows them.

Material quantities are also estimates. Read the [glass, foil, came and solder guide](https://tools.mindsle.com/stained-glass/material-estimates/) before quoting from rough inputs.

## A reusable estimate for each project.

Lifetime Pro keeps materials, labor and price calculations with saved projects, reusable material presets and CSV export.
